Spode Music Week 2012

Tuesday, October 02, 2012
It's not only in the liturgy that you would associate Dominicans with music. Readers of Godzdogz will know that fr. Robert Verrill has been a regular feature of Oxford University Philharmonia concerts over the last few years; and last year, I joined the same orchestra on flute. Of course, some members of the orchestra were initially startled to see two Dominican habits in their midst and may have wondered if this was some kind of conspiracy! Read more

Our Lady of Walsingham

Monday, September 24, 2012
Today is the feast of Our Lady of Walsingham. Walsingham is known as 'England's Nazareth', a place of pilgrimage for almost a thousand years, ever since the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Richeldis de Faverches in the eleventh century. So, Our Lady of Walsingham carries a special significance to the Christians of our land. The National Shrine reminds us of the ancient faith we hold, which has shaped our culture and graced our people over the centuries. Walsingham remains a beautiful witness to the Annunciation at Nazareth, when God 'pitched his tent among us', taking our human flesh to himself in Jesus Christ. Read more

The Solemn Profession of fr Nicholas Crowe, OP.

Thursday, September 20, 2012
On Sunday 16th September in the church of the Priory of the Holy Spirit, Oxford, during Mass, Brother Nicholas Crowe made solemn profession, consecrating himself to God and committing himself ‘until death’ to follow Christ in the way of life laid out by St Dominic and enshrined in our constitutions, as a friar preacher. Nicholas chose to add ‘Paul’ as a religious name, after the great apostle whose writings St Dominic carried around with him. We were joined by Nicholas’ family and many of his friends. After the church celebration, we continued to celebrate in the refectory, enjoying food and drink and especially everyone’s good company, love and conversation. Read more

Blackfriars Summer Fair

Wednesday, June 20, 2012
You might think that moving the customary Blackfriars Easter Fair to a later date, and calling it the Blackfriars Summer Fair, would increase the chances of warm, sunny weather; at least, until the faltering start to the British summer this year threatened to wreck such hopes. In the end – praise God! – the summer came back just in time. So it was, following the 9.30 Family Mass last Sunday, that the fun began. Read more

On Saturday evening the community celebrated Pentecost Vigil, and on Sunday the feast continued, with the conventual Mass being followed by a feast to which all the doorkeepers at Blackfriars were invited. Here are some pictures from the two evenings: Read more

Match Report - Blackfriars take on Ripon at Cuddesdon

Tuesday, March 06, 2012
This weekend Blackfriars Hall met Ripon College, Cuddesdon (a Church of England theological college) for a friendly match hosted at Cuddesdon. As the Blackfriars' team were running a little short on players, Ripon generously let some of theirs play on Blackfriars' team. After some warming up and strategic briefing, the teams were ready for kick-off. This is how it went...

Both keepers did an excellent job...

And the winning team?

But no hard feelings, shake hands...

The two teams!

After a beautiful day up at Cuddesdon, the teams said farewell, and the brothers returned to their daily rhythm. It might be that both body and mind fell into a particular deep meditation before vespers that evening...
