Great Dominicans: Albertus Magnus

Tuesday, November 17, 2015

St Albert is said to have been one of the last people to have known everything that was known in his day. That might be an exaggeration, but it’s certain that his interests and publications spanned every discipline of his time: from a best-selling work on rocks (de mineralibus), through to geometry, astronomy, friendship, law, love, language, not to mention extensive commentaries on the scriptures, it’s certainly fair to say Albert was universally learned.  Read more

More at BlackfriarsToday we commemorate the Feast of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, two heroic men who made the ultimate sacrifice for the faith in the tumultuous court of Henry VIII. I’ve been asked to write something about St. Thomas More. With some regret, therefore, I shall leave St. John Fisher for another day but before doing so, might I recommend Cardinal Vincent Nichols’ excellent book. Read more

Dominican Priories: Cracow, Poland

Saturday, January 03, 2015

Just as Cracow is a really important place on the map of Poland, so too the Dominican priory is a vital part of the map of Cracow. The Blackfriars arrived in this city in 1223, only a few years after the Order of Friars Preachers was established. The founder of the Cracow Priory was St Hyacinth, who had received the religious habit from St Dominic in 1221. To this day there exists a lively veneration of St Hyacinth. He is the patron of the Polish Dominican Province and of Cracow as well. Every day many people make a pilgrimage to his tomb and also the brothers of St Hyacinth go in procession to the Founder of their Province just after the evening prayers. Read more
